News From The Secretary/Treasurer
3/6/99
HELLO WDJAA MEMBERS.....
Its almost convention time again and your
WDJAA board has been busy. Now its time to get everyone caught up and ready for WD
Convention '99 and National Convention '99.
WD '99 will be held in beautiful Coeur d'Alene,
Idaho April 9-11. Registration deadline is 3/19 and hotel deadline is 3/20.
Flights should be into Spokane, Washington where WSU will be providing rides to the
hotel. Much more information is available on the convention site page, http://www.wsu.edu/~cmb/convention . Or you
can get to it from the new, improved, and model for the Nation WDJAA home page, http://www.kkytbswd.org
. Aaron has been doing a phenomenal job.
Enclosed is a copy of the Registration Form,
Contact list for the Hotel, and host chapter. John Bensen and Aaron Seifert have
been working on the 3rd Post-Ritual Reception. And yours truly is working on the
fundraiser. This year, we will try something a little different at both WD and National
Convention. We will be doing a dues raffle where the proceeds are split between the
winner, the Joint WD Council, and WDJAA. Similarly at Nationals, we will do the same but
the proceeds will be split between the winner(s), NAA, and WDJAA. Oh, by the way, don't be
surprised if you get asked to sit on a committee. They want our input this year!! Wow how
times have changed.
For those of you who ARE NOT attending WD '99, the
Officers have a challenge. Donate $10 to WDJAA to support the raffle and the District. You
will receive a raffle entry, by making a donation to the District and WDJAA. WDJAA???
At this convention, we will be electing new
officers for WDJAA. The WDJAA Board decided to add two new positions to better distribute
effort and to get more involvement. The office of Secretary/Treasurer was broken into two
positions and the office of Vice-President was broken into Vice-President of Membership
and Vice-President of Projects. Enclosed is a proposed new version of the By-Laws
outlining the new positions and responsibilities. Please read over the By-Laws and give us
feedback.
Additionally, this year is the NAA Board of
Director election year. So far, four candidates have voiced interest. If you are
interested, please contact Kathy Godwin at keg@bioanalytical.com
or 765-742-5075. Additional information is also available on the NAA webpage, http://www.kkytbs.org . Kathy would like a brief letter
of intent with experience, skills, and goals by 3/31. The two current candidates for Tau
Beta Sigma are Kathi Waddle and Heather Horstman. The two current candidates for Kappa
Kappa Psi are John Bensen and Richard Mackey. Note, voting for NAA members may be done by
proxy. Contact Kathy Godwin for more details.
A brief note on National Convention '99. The
Convention is in St. Louis, MO July 27-August 1. Details are on the National webpage and
will follow in the next newsletter.
Finally, I would like to point out that I have
MOVED!! My new address is avaliable to those that request it at .
WDJAA,
Richard Mackey
Secretary/Treasurer WDJAA '98-'99

Reports:
Sec/Treas Report Richard Mackey
1) One mailing sent 11/22/98
2) Current membership 25
3) Current balance $614.88
4) Special Thanks to Aaron/Eric for taking over publications
V-Pres Report Aaron Seifert
1) Fanfare published at the beginning of December
2) An ad-hoc social committee was formed by the fanfare members (Mike Rich, Eric Geedey,
Alyda McCarthy, and Kathi Waddle). They are investigating pre-planned activities we could
attend.
3) Sec/Treas needs to update some members' phone numbers
4) Feedback on the website is very positive and is getting lots of hits. Being used and
recognized throughout the country.
President Kathy Godwin
1) Received some feedback forms and reviewing for potential direction changes in the
organization
2) Reception for Convention 99 needs to be investigated. Sec/Treas should talk to John
Bensen and Matt DeCample for help.
3) If there are any suggested changes to the NAA constitution, they need to be brought up
so they can passed on for Nationals.
4) NAA BOD elections are this year. We need candidates and qualification form for the
candidates. Kathy will handle.
5) Sponsoring of chapters and been interesting. Aaron and Eric have visited and assisted
NAU as requested. Heather McGraw and Keren Cedillos never received any response from Utah.
Next year, we will choose other chapters suggested by the Council. This will ensure
we "Pass Around the Love of WDJAA."
6) Colonization should be handled primarily by the sponsoring chapter and the colony;
however, WDJAA can sponsor the potential colony representative coming to Districts during
the interview process before colonization begins.
7) Discussed an NIB scholarship/stipend for students in the WD.
New Business/Discussion
1) Suggestion to donate $200 to Joint WD Council at convention. Agreement by all with the
exception that if we sponsor a potential colony representative or the reception is too
expensive we may need to scale this back.
2) Request by the Sec/Treas to split the position into two separate positions. Rational:
Publications is very time consuming and has been handled EXTREMELY well by the VP for the
last two years. The Sec/Treas really does not have time. The new positions would be
Secretary responsible for publications/newsletter and the Treasurer would remain
responsible for Minutes and Monies. All agreed this would be ok.
Note: At this point, the VP stated that he really
has too much stuff to do as well and his position should be broken into two offices. Given
this, the Sec/Treas suggested the new position of VPMS...the Vice-President of
Miscellaneous S..t. Suggestion agreed on by all. Ed note: The intent was to create two new
positions: Sec and VP-MS; however, at this time, I suggest we only add 1 more as follows.
VP-SAC (Vice President of Socialization and Communication) who will be responsible for the
newsletter and social committee. The Sec/Treas will retain in tacks with reduced
responsibilities.

Nationals: 1/4 to WDJAA
1/4 to NAA
1/2 to Winner(s)

4) WD Convention info needs to go out ASAP. Have
not received anything. In the mailing, the members will be challenged to attend or
to donate $10 to WDJAA. Funds from this challenge will be passed on to the WD Joint
Council.
5) Suggestion to add honorary membership type to WDJAA. This would be extended to all Past
National Presidents living in the Western District. They will receive free membership in
WDJAA but will have no voting rights or any rights within NAA. The following individuals
shall receive this privilege if this change is ratified: Jack Lee, Robert Fleming, and
Nadine Dorschler. These individuals will be notified by mail at that time.
By-Law Changes:
I) Article V Section 5.3 moved to Section 5.4

Membership in the Association. The privileges associated with Honorary membership shall
exclude voting. The Honorary Member must pay dues to the National Alumni Association to be
recognized by that Association.
6) When the time permits, the Sec/Treas would like
to have a shingle developed for new members. Most likely done on a color printer.
7) Many on the National Office staff are retiring. Who is our new contact. TBD
mid-February.
8) Aaron's cost for the District Webpage is $10/month which his parents are covering as of
now. This may change.
