2. Kappa Kappa Psi Welcomes Three New Colonies

The National Council of Kappa Kappa Psi is excited to announce three new colonies:

These are the first three new colonies of this biennium. Kappa Kappa Psi currently has 19 Colonies with representation in every district. Also, be on the look for installation announcement for this semester. We have a couple of our groups in their final steps. This is truly a time of historic growth for Kappa Kappa Psi. This is due in part to the wonderful example brothers set on campuses across America. Keep living our values and showing why we are vital to college bands across the country.

5. Kappa Kappa Psi Awards the DSMM to Dr. Joseph Missal

The National Council of Kappa Kappa Psi is pleased to announce the presentation of the Distinguished Service to Music Medal (Concert Band) to Dr. Joseph Missal.

The award was presented by Executive Director Alan Bonner during the Oklahoma State University Wind Ensemble's concert on October 1st.

Dr. Missal is Director of Bands and Professor of Music at Oklahoma State University. In this capacity, he conducts the Wind Ensemble and Symphonic Band and guides all aspects of the OSU Band Program. Dr. Missal also directs the graduate conducting program, teaches undergraduate conducting, and serves as Chairman of the Wind and Percussion Division. He holds a Bachelor of Music in Instrumental Music Education from Michigan State University, a Master of Music in Wind Ensemble/Band Conducting from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, and a Doctor of Musical Arts in Wind Ensemble/Band Conducting from the University of Colorado.

His ensembles have performed for conventions of the World Association for Symphonic Bands and Ensembles (San Louis Obispo, California 1999, Schladming, Austria 1997), the College Band Directors National Association (National Convention Denton, Texas 2001, Boulder, Colorado 1995), National Band Association, the Sonneck Society, Kappa Kappa Psi/Tau Beta Sigma, Oklahoma Music Educators Association, the Percussive Arts Society, and the Western States Collegiate Wind Band Festival. He has received praise from composers David Maslanka, Karl Husa, Dan Welcher, Cindy McTee, David Gillingham, James Fry, Micheal Daugherty, Frank Ticheli, Shafer Mahoney, Stephen Rush, and others for his expressive interpretations of their music.

6. Alpha Chapters Present Honorary Memberships to John Mackey

Composer John Mackey, guest composer during the recent Oklahoma State University Wind Ensemble concert, was presented honorary memberships by the Alpha Chapters of Tau Beta Sigma and Kappa Kappa Psi.

Mr. Mackey holds a Master of Music degree from The Julliard School and a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Cleveland Institute of Music. He particularly enjoys writing music for dance and symphonic winds. His works have been performed at the Sydney Opera House; the Brooklyn Academy of Music; Carnegie Hall; the Kennedy Center; Weill Recital Hall and throughout Italy, Chile, Japan, Colombia, Austria, Brazil, Germany, England, Australia, New Zealand, and the United States.

The OSU Wind Ensemble performed two of Mr. Mackey's works, "Aurora Awakes," and "Asphalt Cocktail." Mr. Mackey has been selected to write the KKPsi and TBSigma Commissioned Work for 2013 as part of the longest, continuous commissioning program in the world for bands.

7. The PODIUM Information

The Fall 2009 (post National Convention) issue of The PODIUM is being printed and will soon be mailed! Please note the following:

  • As the National Chapter decided during the National Convention, each chapter will receive ONE printed copy of The PODIUM. Chapters can request additional copies of future issues by informing the National Headquarters.
  • The PODIUM can be viewed online at
  • Submissions to the Spring 2010 issue are due November 1, 2009.


  • When you complete your Initiate Classes, REMEMBER, you have 30 days following 3rd degree to submit the Initiate Registration Form to get them entered into the Master Database and avoid the late fee! Don’t wait until the 29th day... EARLY is much better!!
