1999 Joint Special Projects Committee

Final Report

The Joint Special Projects Committee for the 1999 North Central District Convention was charged with the following:

  1. To read and review the 1998 Joint Special Projects committee charges and report.
  2. To discuss the parameters of the 2001 Commissioning Project.
  3. To review the NCD NIB grant application and make suggestions if needed.

The Joint Special Projects Committee decided to delegate the issue of the NCD NIB grant application to the Joint Programs committee. The purpose for the delegation was done in the interest of time. It was seen that the charges would require more time for discussion than was allocated.

The committee entertained a report for the Kappa Kappa Psi and Tau Beta Sigma 2001 Commissioning Project by Rich Eder, the appointed Commissioning Piece Coordinator (CPC). On suggestions from last years committee, Dr. Golemo was asked to compose the piece for the NCD. Guidelines were discussed between Dr. Golemo and Rich Eder. These guidelines include:

  1. It will be no less than an eight-minute work.
  2. The difficulty will be at high school class A (Grade 4) level.
  3. It will be a standard instrumentation.
  4. The inscription on the score and parts will be:
  5. "Commissioned by the North Central District of Kappa Kappa Psi and Tau Beta Sigma"

  6. The piece must be delivered to the commissioning organization by January 1, 2001.
  7. All rights for publication remain with the composer.
  8. The composer must also provide a copy of the score and parts for every chapter of Kappa Kappa Psi and Tau Beta Sigma in the North Central District.
  9. Each chapter has the authority to make as many photocopies of each part as needed for the band at their respective institution.
  10. The cost for the piece will be $100 per minute.
  11. The final contract will be signed by the Kappa Kappa Psi Governor and Tau Beta Sigma Councilor(s)

After much discussion, the committee decided to accept proposed contract with Dr. Golemo as the commissioned composer.

We charge next years committee to decide the parameters to premier the piece. It is recommended that the committee discusses where, when and conducted by whom, the piece is premiered.

It is recommended that fundraising continue for future commissioning projects.

We, the committee, move that Dr. Michael Golemo be the composer of the NCD 2001Commissioning Project, and a contract including points 1-10 is signed.

We would like to thank our committee members and all that attended the Joint Special Projects Committee meetings, as well as our awesome runner, Riley. We would also like to thank our committee advisors, Rose Murray and Sylvia Halbardier. Finally, we would like to thank Rich Eder and Jen Gerwig for all of their work over the last year.
