Beta Sigma, Purdue University
Pajama parties, Seven Deadly Squirrels, and three sexy cats have kept this year interesting for Beta Sigma. We have spiced our chapter up with theme chapter meetings, and the candidate class, The Seven Deadly Squirrels, has kept the semester exciti ng and lively as we work to continue our service to the band.
Ushering, finals and survival packs, costume dances, cleaning and general upkeep of the department and Elliott Hall of Music have kept us busy. Beta Sigma took on several projects this past year. One important one has been watching old videos of the Purdue "All-American" marching band performances, trying to decipher their themes, dates, and even locations. Some films even forced us to learn how to work a double reel projector.
One of service projects used as a rush function gained the candidates interest in our chapter. We invited them to build finals pack, which we sold to band members during finals weeks. They also joined us when we went caroling at a local nursing home .
Last year’s candidate class, Hey, Nice Toaster, working jointly with Gamma Pi Brothers in training class, Shining, completed a cabinet large enough for auxiliaries to store flags, pompoms and batons. It was painted in black and decorated in a gold B lock P; its new home is in the band lounge. In addition to the auxiliary cabinet, the classes also installed cubbyholes for the band lounge in order to organize the jumble of backpacks and band jackets that clutter the lounge.
Dr Leppela, our director of bands, has challenged both chapters with the task to devise a way to prevent the 113 years of pictorial history from falling off the walls. The operations and clothing student offices have asked for help in reorganizing d ead Storage, our final resting place for old (and we mean old) band stuff. This looms as our largest project, and will take a few semesters to see the final results.
Speaking of old, Beta Sigma approaches it’s 40th anniversary on April 12, 1999. The current actives hope to have a birthday celebration with our alumni sisters and brothers, and cherish the memories we all have from Tau Beta Sigma.
