March 2001

Greetings! The National CBDNA meeting in Denton was outstanding and I enjoyed meeting with many of you there. The Small College Intercollegiate Band was very successful and we will be working to have KKY become more involved with supporting this activity. This made me realize how significant our National Intercollegiate Band and national commissioning project are to our organizations. I hope you will encourage your best musicians to audition. Membership in KKY or TBS is not required to participate.

AUDITIONS for the 2001 National Intercollegiate Band.

We are very proud of this outstanding national project. The 2001 NIB conductor will be Bryan Shelburne, US Army (Ret.), former Leader and Commander of the US Army Band in Washington D.C. Our 2001 commissioned composer is Timothy Mahr. The NIB will take place in Corpus Christi, TX, July 22-24. Each member will be provided three nights housing, a luncheon with the conductor and commissioning composers, an NIB polo shirt and 2001 NIB CD. Students can submit an audition tape or CD to the National Headquarters before April 21. The application form and audition requirements are on the National Web-Site (www.kkytbs.org/nib.html) and listed in the Fall 2000 Issue of the Podium. The NIB 2001 performance dates are July 22-24, 2001 in Corpus Christi, TX. Students can also audition at their District Convention this spring.

Strategic Planning.

The National Council and Board of Trustees have for the past few years met annually for the purpose of setting goals, creating projects and programs, and making long range plans for our fraternity.

These meetings have been very productive including these projects: AEA Scholarship, Leadership Development, The Silver Baton, and the Matching Grants. All based on our
KKY Mission Statement: “We are a fraternal organization that promotes the advancement of college and university bands through dedicated service and support to bands; comprehensive education; leadership opportunities; and recognition; for the benefit of its members and society”.

Matching Grants 2001-0002.
This financial assistance program for supporting guest conductors and guest artists with your college concert bands will be continued. As you make plans for the next year please be aware that you can obtain $500.00 from Kappa Kappa Psi if you are willing to complete some paperwork. The grant application is on the national website, and these are approved at the national council meetings which occur in late July and mid-January. Deadlines are twice a year: July 1 and January 10. If you want a grant for fall 2001 please click
here for further information.

2001 NATIONAL CONVENTION
We have a very exciting convention planned and we invite you to attend. Headliners are Dr. Lautenzenheiser on becoming better leaders and role models and Brett Sokolov on hazing and the law. In addition, Bryan Shelburne will do a conducting workshop, Tim Mahr and Julie Giroux will discuss composing and eight of our sponsors/directors will conduct our reading band. And we will have the Warner-Robbins Air Force Band perform. As you can see besides having some fun we want this to be an educational event. July 25- 28, Omni Bayfront, Corpus Christi, TX.
