1. Kappa Kappa Psi Announces New CFRs
by Dr. Rod Chesnutt, KKPsi National President
Brothers,
This fall Kappa Kappa Psi re-opened the search for a new Chapter Field Representative.
Dr. Matney, Colonel Bonner and I interviewed three well qualified candidates
for Chapter Field Representative. It was our opinion that all of them could
be successful in this role. After the inteviews, I am pleased to announce
we offered the position to Phil Rubin, a brother from the Kappa Mu Chapter
of the University of Georgia. Phil served on the SE District Council as Vice
President, and he has just completed an internship with the Commission for
a New Georgia, as part of the Governor's office.
Phil brings a wealth of musical, educational and fraternal experiences to the
position, and he is already on board at the National Headquarters in Stillwater.
He has completed plans for his chapter visits for the remainder of this spring
semester and will begin his travels February 14 to the Texas Music Educators
Association annual convention in San Antonio and over a dozen chapter visits
as well. For more information on Phil, please view the National Hq's Staff
page at www.kkytbs.org/hq-staff.htm. To review his Chapter Visitation Plans,
that information is available at www.kkpsi.org/chapterfieldrep.asp.
During my tenure on the Kappa Kappa Psi National Council, it has been increasingly
evident that our fraternity requires more interaction on the campus level.
We have had an influx of new chapters, some chapters have not been visited
in approximately 6-7 years, and our current configuration does not allow for
flexibility in addressing individual chapter needs during visits with workshops
to the extent to be effective. Therefore at this past Winter Council meeting,
Dr. Matney and I presented the National Council a recommendation that we reconfigure
the budget to allow for the hire of another Chapter Field Representative so
the fraternity could better address the needs of the active membership. The
Council voted unanimously to approve our recommendation. We considered all
subsequent applications and felt we had an outstanding pool of candidates that
had interviewed in December.
Based on the previous interviews, I am delighted to announce that Jennifer
Murdock was extended the offer of serving as CFR, and she accepted. Jen is
a brother from the Gamma Chapter from the University of Washington with two
terms on the Western District Council, including one term as District President.
She currently is employed by AmeriCorps, Intergenerational Innovations as an
Intergernerational Program Coordinator, where she is involved with program
development, implementation, marketing and management. Jen will join the HQ Staff
in July, and and I know that all brothers will welcome her as we continue to "Strive
for the Highest."
You may send any congratulatory notes to both Phil & Jen to the CFR email
address at kkycfr@kkytbs.org for now.

5. KKPsi Board Chair Golemo Presents the Makovsky Award to John Whitwell
by Dr. Michael Golemo, Chair, KKPsi Board of Trustees
Last Friday evening I had the honor of presenting the Bohumil Makovsky Award
to John Whitwell, Director of Bands at Michigan State University, who is retiring
at the end of this year. This occurred at a concert of the Michigan State
University Wind Symphony for the Michigan Music Educators Association First
Annual Convention - which was held in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
In attendance for this concert were hundreds (if not thousands) of music educators
from Michigan, as well as a few hundred high school students from the Michigan
All-State Band, Orchestra and Choir (at both the middle school and high school
levels).
Whitwell is retiring this year from Michigan State, but will remain an active
guest conductor. He is an influential member of ABA and on the board of directors
for the Midwest International Band and Orchestra convention in Chicago. He
served as the conductor of the NIB back in 1997 - and is a past recipient of
the DSMM award.
In presenting the award, I talked about Kappa Kappa Psi, who Boh was, and
how John Whitwell is truly worthy of this recognition. Past National President,
Mike Osborn was also in attendance, and afterwards Mike and I had dinner with John
and members of the MSU band department. It was quite a night!
Thank you for the opportunity to present this award to one of my mentors.
