Kappa Kappa Psi & Tau Beta Sigma National Convention 2009

One of the most exciting programs Kappa Kappa Psi and Tau Beta Sigma, begun over half of a century ago, is the National Intercollegiate Band (NIB). This ensemble continues to make a significant contribution to the advancement of the collegiate band. Open to all qualified musicians, whether or not they are members of the Fraternity or Sorority, the NIB brings members face-to-baton with some of the most dynamically stimulating composers and respected conductors in America. Dr. F. Lee Bowling, Kappa Kappa Psi National President (Alpha Iota) from 1941-1947, is regarded as the Founder of the National Intercollegiate Band. Colonel John R. Bourgeois, Director Emeritus of "The President's Own" United States Marine Band, will be the conductor of the 2009 ensemble. Some prominent conductors of the past include Michael Haithcock, William D. Revelli, Frederick Fennell, Richard Franco Goldman, Donald Hunsburger, John L. Whitwell, Arnold Gabriel, Ray E. Cramer, James Croft, Alan Bonner, Donald Wilcox, Frank Wickes and many others.

The NIB will perform the opening concert for the 2009 National Convention of Kappa Kappa Psi and Tau Beta Sigma to be held in Phoenix, Arizona.

For the past fifty years, Kappa Kappa Psi and Tau Beta Sigma have sought to add original and quality literature to the wind band repertoire through their Commissioning Project, the longest running commissioning project in wind band history. Many of these works have become a part of the basic repertoire of the wind band and have received their premier performance by the NIB. Members of the 2009-NIB will have the opportunity to introduce a new work for band by composer Mark Camphouse.

If you would like to be a member of the 2009-NIB, you should first check your schedule to see if you are able to be in Phoenix July 19-21, 2009. Registration will be at noon on Sunday, July 19 followed by chair placement auditions. Complimentary housing will be provided on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday evenings, July 19, 20, and 21, 2009. Meals and transportation to and from Phoenix are not included.

You should begin now to prepare for your recorded audition. Tapes or CDs are due to the National Headquarters in Stillwater, Oklahoma by Wednesday, April 15, 2009 (postmarked). The selection process will be completed by mid-May and you will be notified soon thereafter.
